This war memorial dates back to 1724 and was built to honour the memory of the first Portuguese people buried on the island. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Campo S. Gabriel was used as a cemetery for underprivileged Portuguese people. The rich were buried near the churches. Most of the dead buried there came from ships that sailed to India under particularly difficult conditions. As an example, during the winter of 1541-1542, no less than eighty Portuguese died during the voyage
