The red building in front of the statue of Magellan was once a Jesuit college. The palace, built in 1610, was burnt down in 1670 and rebuilt in 1674. In 1759, with the Jesuit fathers expelled from Portugal and its colonies, the college became the residence of the governor general. In 1898, the governor of the province was based in Nampula. Today, the building is splendid. A small naval museum has been set up on the ground floor, where waves of historical immigration are recorded.
