FORT DE SÃO LOURENÇO
It was originally built in 1588 to defend the south of the island from the Omani sultans who were expanding into East Africa at the end of the 17th century. A rounded fortification of 1695 preceded the triangular one of 1830, which had twenty-two cannons. Detached from the southern tip of the island of Mozambique, this small fort was nicknamed locally the "casa feita numa noite no meio do mar", in other words, a house made for a night in the middle of the sea, which one can only approach by boat, following the traces of history.
