Built in 1781 and considered the second fortification in Mozambique, the Fortaleza is built in a star shape. It could accommodate 300 men, and a chapel had even been built there in 1795. It was designed to protect the island from opposing armed forces. After major restoration work in 1963, today it can be visited and has opened its doors to culture. There are beautiful silver jewels, a wide selection of Makonde sculptures, and a museum to understand the history and customs of the Quirimbas Islands.
