MÜNCHENER TIERPARK HELLABRUN
Founded in 1911, the Hellabrunn Zoological Park is home to 500 species of animals! It is the very first geo-zoo in the world!
This beautiful zoo, south of Munich, has about 5,000 animals and nearly 500 species. Founded in 1911, it immediately developed the concept - unheard of at the time - of a geo-zoo: the animals are divided by continent, according to their geographical origin, which makes it possible to reproduce their natural habitat as well as possible. Walking around the 40-hectare zoo is like taking a world tour of animals, from the Arctic to Africa, from Europe to Asia and from America to Australia. The animals live in natural communities within large enclosures, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Isar River floodplains. More than 500 exotic and local species - ranging from giraffes and Alpine ibexes to leafcutter ants - live here. Highlights include the historic elephant house, which was completely renovated in 2016, the bat cave and a jungle world. Maybe you'll even flush out a bear as you walk down a path... The zoo is especially fun for younger kids: there's a dedicated children's area with goats, and two playgrounds are sure to get your kids running around! Several stands are available for visitors who wish to eat in the park. A permanent exhibition and temporary exhibitions allow visitors to understand the importance of biodiversity and the role of zoos in the international protection of species.
