MICHAELSKIRCHE
The beautiful Renaissance church was built by the Bavarian Duke William V. Its crypt contains the tombs of many Wittelsbachs.
St. Michael's Church was built at the request of Duke William V of Bavaria, between 1583 and 1597, as a sign of his deep commitment to the Counter-Reformation. Built in the Renaissance style (the first north of the Alps to be built in this style), the church's interior features one of the widest barrel vaults in the world. The facade, most of which was destroyed during the war, was renovated in 2013. Its crypt is the necropolis of Bavarian dukes such as William V of Bavaria, Maximilian I and Ludwig II of Bavaria.
