RUHMESHALLE AND BAVARIA
A Bavarian-style pantheon with a monumental bronze statue weighing 70 tonnes and standing 18 metres tall, from the Bavarian state of Munich.
The Ruhmeshalle, a sort of Bavarian pantheon, is located on the west side of the Theresienwiese square, where the Oktoberfest is held every year. From its elevated position, the monumental statue of Bavaria overlooks the Theresienwiese. The Bavaria statue was a technical masterpiece of its time: it is made of pure bronze and weighs more than 70 tons at a height of 18 metres. After its unveiling at the 25th Oktoberfest in 1850, it quickly became the symbol and guardian of the state of Bavaria. The statue depicts a lady dressed in Germanic style: she is wearing a bearskin, an oak crown in her left hand and a lion on a leash in her right hand. You can climb a small spiral staircase inside the body. In the head of the statue is a small platform, where a maximum of three people can stand. On busy days, you will have to be patient before you can access it. But you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Theresienwiese and all of Munich.
The temple, located just behind the statue, is the work of the renowned Leo von Klenze, the same architect who built the Propylaea on the Königsplatz, you can recognize his style directly. Inside the pantheon, busts of Bavarian personalities from the past and present are displayed. The most important scientists, politicians, painters and other artists who have been associated with the Bavarian capital in one way or another can be found here.
