The Alter Hof, literally the "Old Court", was the imperial residence of Ludwig IV, Duke of Bavaria and Germanic Roman Emperor in the early 14th century. Nicknamed "Ludwig the Bavarian", he was the first Wittelsbach to achieve imperial status. From the 16th century onwards, the Alter Hof was merely an administrative building, its function being superseded by the Residenz. Like most of the buildings in the old town, it was rebuilt after being destroyed during the Second World War and today bears timid witness to its bygone glory.
