FRIEDENSENGEL
The 38-metre high Angel of Peace was erected to commemorate the first Treaty of Versailles in 1871 and the end of the war.
This 38-metre-high column - with its statue of the Angel of Peace - was erected to commemorate the first Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1871. This marked the end of the war between Prussia and France. The 6-metre-high statue itself (reminiscent of Nike, the goddess of victory) holds an olive branch in her right hand, symbolizing peace, and the Palladion in her left hand, the image of the goddess Athena, symbolizing struggle and wisdom. The fact that this peace monument stands on the Place de l'Europe is a fitting symbol.
