SIEGESTOR
The Siegestor, Munich's triumphal arch, magnifies the courage of the Bavarian armies against Napoleon and calls for peace.
Built in 1852 by Friedrich von Gärtner, this triumphal arch (modelled on the Constantine Arch in Rome) was commissioned by Ludwig I of Bavaria. Bavaria is represented in human form, driving a chariot led by four lions, all looking in different directions. It glorifies the bravery of the Bavarian army during the wars against Napoleon's France. After the Second World War, the heavily damaged gate was rebuilt with the inscription: "Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, remembering peace".
