HAUS DER KUNST - HOUSE OF ART
This temple, with its typical Third Reich architecture, hosted propaganda exhibitions at the time. Today, the place is a centre whose vocation is to show, through its temporary exhibitions, the best of international contemporary art. It hosts about ten exhibitions per year, presenting works by emerging talents and established artists. Over the past twenty years, visitors have had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the work of artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Matthew Barney, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Gilbert and George, William Egglestone, Georg Baselitz, Gerhard Richter, Dumas, Amrita Sher-Gil and Hanne Darboven. In 2011, its former anti-aircraft shelter in the basement was converted to house a selection of video art from the ever-changing Goetz collection. The Haus der Kunst also tells the story of its past in the Archiv Gallery, a free exhibition containing films, maps and objects from the era of National Socialism and the post-war period. The building was inaugurated by Adolf Hitler in 1937 under the name Haus der Deutschen Kunst or "House of German Art". Its unique history is reflected in the original paintings on the walls of the building's Golden Bar, which bears the name of the mural painting found on site. The bar offers refreshments for visitors during the day and remains open in the evening once the museum is closed.
