PINAKOTHEK DER MODERNE
A museum entirely devoted to modern art, with 4 distinct collections: painting, architecture, graphics and design.
The Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich is one of the largest spaces in Europe dedicated to contemporary art, architecture and design of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is in any case the largest in Germany. This Pinakothek, the newest of the three, brings together four autonomous museums that work closely together: the Sammlung Moderne Kunst of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, the Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum, the Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universität München and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München. Four modes of artistic expression are highlighted here: painting, architecture, design, illustration. The spacious architecture of the building - built according to the plans of architect Stephan Braunfels - allows for interaction between the different collections, while preserving the identity of each of the four museums.
On the painting side, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the world of the French Fauvists, the Italian Futurists, the German Expressionists and the Surrealists. There are 39 works by Max Beckmann, as well as works by Francis Bacon, Georg Baselitz and Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Jeff Wall, and many more of their contemporaries. The collection thus covers a broad spectrum: from the avant-garde of the early 20th century to the present day. Admirers of design and architecture will also find pleasure here. Among the names of the architects of the 19th and 20th centuries are famous names such as Leo von Klenze and Le Corbusier.
