The Jewish Museum in Munich traces the history of the Jewish community and culture in Munich.
The idea of a Jewish Museum in Munich emerged as early as 1928 when a group of individuals interested in Jewish history and culture first met with the intention of creating one. The project was put on hold until it was revived almost four decades after the end of the war. The opportunity to create a Jewish museum as a municipal project finally arose when the Jewish community decided to build its new main synagogue and community center on St. Jakobs-Platz. Thus, the museum opened in 2007, right next to the synagogue. As a reminder, 3,500 Munich Jews were deported and murdered between 1941 and 1945. The Great Synagogue of Munich was destroyed in June 1938 (5 months before the infamous Kristallnacht) because Munich was to become the capital of the National Socialist movement.
In the basement, the permanent exhibition gives an overview of Jewish life and culture in Munich. A city map on the floor situates some key events and interesting biographies-testimonials, which are echoed in the photographs on the wall. A timeline traces the history of Munich's Jewish community since the Middle Ages. The other two floors of the museum are designed to host temporary exhibitions.
