ZUGSPITZE
The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Bavaria and Germany. The 360° view from there is absolutely sensational.
The Zugspitze is a major tourist attraction in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region. And with good reason: the panorama from the summit is breathtaking! What's more, the Zugspitze boasts a superlative: at 2,962 metres, it's the highest peak in Bavaria, and at the same time the highest in Germany. Provided the weather conditions are right, you can see over 400 peaks in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy for up to 250 km. In fine weather, you can see as far as Munich. In winter, the slopes of the Zugspitze are popular with skiers. The pyramidal peak of the Alpspitze (2,628 m) is the landmark of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The Kreuzeck (1,651 m) is famous among winter sports fans for the famous Kandahar downhill, where World Cup events are regularly held.
Getting there. If you don't want to climb over 2,000 m to reach the steep summit of the Zugspitze, do what everyone else does - take the train or cable car! It's practical, it's quicker and it's also a great way to enjoy the views. The journey starts at Garmisch-Partenkirchen station, where you take the Zahnradbahn (cog railway) through Grainau, Eibsee and a 4.5 km tunnel. To reach the summit, take the Gletscherbahn, then the Seilbahn (brand-new cable car).
Other gondolas take you quickly to the Alpspitze, Kreuzeck and Hausberg mountain pastures.
