FRAUENINSEL
An island with a Benedictine convent, less interesting than the neighbouring Herreninsel.
This "women's island" is home to Frauenwörth Abbey, a convent founded by Duke Tassil in the 8th century. The interior of the convent - now home to Benedictine nuns - is not open to the public. Opposite the church is the Torhalle, a building dating from the Carolingian era, which is also evident in its Romanesque structure. Free admission from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (May to October). This Fraueninsel is less spectacular than the Herreninsel next door, which not only has an abbey, but also a castle!
