SCHLOSS NEUBURG
Castle, where you can admire numerous works of art, a chapel and the central square surrounding the site.
The Renaissance castle of Neuburg an der Donau was built between 1530 and 1545 on the initiative of Count Ottheinrich of the Palatine branch of the House of Wittelsbach. Originally a medieval defensive fortress, Ottheinrich turned it into a residential palace in the Renaissance style, which was constantly renovated, improved or rebuilt by his successors. Today's visitor will be dazzled by the succession of rooms whose sobriety only reinforces the brilliance of their architecture. Before or after your visit, you should take a tour of the castle to appreciate its size and to admire the aesthetic research that inspired the desiderata of the masters of the place. For a nice view of the castle, walk along the Danube towards the east.
Do not miss the beautiful castle chapel(Schlosskapelle), inaugurated in 1543, the oldest Bavarian Protestant church (Otto Henry was a Lutheran and worked to spread the Protestant Reformation). Its frescoes were made by Hans Bocksberger and the locals are used to call it, without any chauvinism, the Sistine Chapel of Bavaria! The influence of Italian art is omnipresent, both in the architectural style and in the ornaments.
The Staatsgalerie, an annex of the Bavarian State Painting Collection, houses numerous works by Flemish masters such as Peter Paul Rubens, Antony van Dyck and Jan Brueghel in the west wing of the castle. A must-see for painting enthusiasts
