PORTA PRAETORIA
This vestige of Roman times is known as the Porta Praetoria, the northern entrance to the ancient Roman camp, Castra Regina.
The Porta Praetoria is considered to be one of Regensburg's oldest buildings. In Roman times, it was the northern entrance to the Roman legionary camp Castra Regina. In the 16th century, the remains of this ancient gateway were integrated into the building of the bishop's residence, thus preserving them to this day. The Porta Praetoria and the Porta Nigra in Trier, built at the same time, are the only two Roman gates preserved north of the Alps. A panel shows how it looked in Roman times.
