STEINERNE BRÜCKE (STONE BRIDGE)
Crossing the Danube, this magnificent stone bridge is inherited from the medieval period.
It's on every postcard showing the proud riverside city. This magnificent 330-meter-long stone bridge spanning the Danube was built between 1135 and 1146 by order of Bavarian Duke Henry X. A masterpiece of secular Romanesque architecture, it's easy to imagine what a feat of engineering it was to build! In fact, for centuries it was the only bridge leading into the city. Its construction enabled the city to extend its influence and increase its trade and commercial exchanges with cities on the other side of the Danube. A bridge that enabled Regensburg to become one of the wealthiest cities in the Middle Ages. Originally comprising 16 piers, the closest of which to the city is now blocked, the bridge has changed continuously over the centuries. Of the three towers originally built, only the one on the city side remains. Of all the sculptures, only one remains: the Bridge Man(Bruckmandl), probably representing the bridge's architect. Sitting at the highest point of the bridge, he looks out towards the cathedral. Take the time to stop in the middle of the bridge and gaze out over the city. You'll find that many Ratisbonnais come here at the end of the day to rest on the banks of the Danube, picnic, have a drink and enjoy the majesty of the stone bridge once again.
