WITTELSBACH FOUNTAIN
The Wittelsbach Fountain, inaugurated in 1903, commemorates the centenary of Passau's incorporation into Bavaria.
This magnificent Wittelsbach Fountain (Wittelsbacher Brunnen in German) was inaugurated in 1903 to commemorate the centenary of Passau's incorporation into the Electorate of Bavaria (which was to become a kingdom shortly thereafter). The fountain was created by the Munich artist Jakob Bradl. It is dominated by the patron saint of Bavaria, the Virgin Mary. The other three sculptures represent the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz, the three rivers that meet in Passau, the aptly named "city of three rivers" (Dreiflüssestadt).
