GERMANISCHES NATIONALMUSEUM
The Germanisches Museum is a gigantic museum, with a very rich collection of paintings, clothes, instruments, etc.
The largest and most famous museum dedicated to art and culture in the German-speaking world is internationally renowned. It is both a museum and a research institution and is appreciated by the general public as well as by researchers. Housed in an extraordinary architectural ensemble combining an old Carthusian cloister and ultra-modern buildings, its interdisciplinary, comprehensible and lively exhibitions retrace all periods, from the beginnings of prehistory to the transition to the modern and technological era of the 20th century. One discovers daily culture up to the 17th century, clothing from the 17th century on, scientific and musical instruments, works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries, reconstructions of peasant homes, etc. The 20th century is not left out, since an entire floor is devoted to expressionism, the Bauhaus and the years of reconstruction, to name but a few of the permanent collection. A must-see for art and history enthusiasts.
Among the highlights of the collection are the works of the city's own Albrecht Dürer, including his depiction of Charlemagne wearing the imperial insignia. In the field of painting, there are also some famous names: Lucas Cranach the Elder, E. L. Kirchner, Rembrandt, etc. One of the most valuable objects is the oldest globe in the world that has been preserved to this day: the Behaim globe.
