WILLIBALDSBURG
Medieval fortress housing a Jurassic Museum and a Museum of Protohistory and Prehistory in Eichstätt.
This medieval fortress, built in the 14th century, was the seat of the prince-bishops of Eichstätt until 1725. It owes its name to Willibald, an Anglo-Saxon missionary and Eichstätt's first bishop. Today, the castle walls house two museums:
The Jura-Museum: a Jurassic museum with a large collection of fossils found in the region.
The Museum für Ur- und Frühgeschichte: a museum of proto- and prehistory, featuring the reconstructed skeleton of a gigantic mammoth over 6,000 years old.
