A beautiful garden - where the Hohenstaufen castle once stood - with a beautiful view of the river and the city.

Burggarten. This was the site of the royal castle built in 1142 by Conrad III, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. But don't look for the fortress, it was devastated by a major earthquake in 1356. The castle has been replaced by a pretty garden, with a breathtaking view over the Tauber river and part of the city. In the center, there is also a small garden with statues representing the four seasons of the year and the four elements. All that remains of the former Hohenstaufen castle is the St. Blaise Chapel(Blasiuskapelle), which survived the earthquakes. Today, it serves as a memorial to the victims of war. A stone also commemorates the Jewish victims of a pogrom that took place in Rothenburg in 1298.

Burgtor. This is one of the 42 towers that make up the medieval fortifications of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The castle gate (Burgtor) dates back to 1360 and served as an entrance between the residence and the town. It was systematically closed as soon as the sun began to decline, and reopened at sunrise. This meant that all residents were strictly forbidden to leave the city walls, and that unwanted visitors were also forbidden to enter, unless an exceptional dispensation was granted by the city councillor. This was an effective way of ensuring peace of mind, as any offenders would have a boiling liquid poured over them! Right next to the Burgtor is the puppet theater.

Wunderschönes kreativ angelegtes Gärtchen

Very beautiful gardens that are placed on a rocky outcrop. These gardens are nice for a stroll around and sit. There is ample seating, bins and even toilets. A good place for a picnic. You can also access paths that make there way down to the valley floor.

If you enjoy a walk I recommend these. Also at the end of the gardens is a lookout platform that really lets you appreciate the area.

Tolle Aussicht. Ist ein sehr romantisches Städtchen.
