Levi-Strauss, the famous inventor of jeans, was born in this house in Buttenheim on April 26, 1829. His father died of tuberculosis in 1846. With no money, the mother, Rebecca, and her 17-year-old son left Bavaria and headed for the United States, more precisely New York, to join the family. In 1853, the young man changed his name from "Löb" to Levi and founded his company in San Francisco under the name "Levi Strauss and Co", a very promising enterprise..
