SYSTÈME DE GESTION DE L'EAU D'AUGSBOURG
The city of Augsburg boasts a water management system that is quite unique in the world: not only in terms of the engineering innovations it has brought about over time, but also in terms of the very long historical period over which this ingenious hydraulic network has evolved. It all began in the 14th century and continues to this day. A fascinating collection of 22 listed and protected elements, canals and water towers, some dating back to the 15th or 17th centuries. These include original pumping systems, as well as monumental fountains of great artistic value, and water-powered plants that still allow the city of Augsburg to benefit from this sustainable energy today, at a time when water-related issues are crucial. In this sense, the Swabian city can and should be considered a pioneer in this field, at the cutting edge and a source of inspiration for many European and global metropolises.
Surprisingly, and proof that we are indeed dealing here with pioneering inventions in man's relationship with water, the separation of drinking water from production water was established as early as 1545, at a time when no link had yet been established between disease and the misuse of unpurified water. In 2019, this complex will be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There's no doubt that turning on the water tap will be of great value during your visit to Augsburg.
