FUGGEREI
The Fuggerei is the oldest social housing estate in the world, a city within a city with 67 houses, 142 apartments and its church.
The Fuggerei is, as its name suggests, closely linked to the activities of the great Fugger family: the family who, at the height of their glory, won the election of Charles V as emperor. Although the Fuggers were a line of highly efficient bankers, they did not disdain social work, and we owe them the first social housing estate in Europe. Built in 1521, the conditions of occupancy have remained strictly unchanged since that date! As a result of Jacob Fugger's determination to help the city's needy, it's possible to visit the aforementioned housing estate to discover the innovative architecture of the time, and the show apartment of a contemporary rental, as well as apartment number 13, which is the only one to have survived the various storms of history. What's more, once you've crossed the perimeter wall, you'll be able to visit a number of places that trace the history of this very special place through the centuries: from the fountain to the bronze statue and the fireplaces, there's plenty to intrigue you and arouse your curiosity. And for the thrill-seekers out there, you should know that it was here, in Swabian territory, that the first pyre was lit to start the witch-hunt in 1625, at 52 Ochsengasse. The Fuggerei social housing estate is the last place in and around the city to be lit by... gas! A highly recommended visit to get a closer look at the authentic city of Augsburg.
