The deepwater port of Lomé was built in the early 1960s in response to increased traffic and the inadequacy of the existing wharf . Its construction was the result of an economic and technical agreement signed on July 20, 1960 between Germany and the Togolese Republic. The foundation stone was laid on November 23, 1962. Entrusted in 1964 to a group of German companies, the work was completed in 1968. The official operation of the port began on May1, 1968, putting an end to the activities of the old wharf.
