My husband and I did the 3 day/2 night “Deep Mountain Hilltribe Explorer” trek out of Luang Prabang. This feedback/advice mostly pertains to this tour, but I’m sure it will also be relevant to other homestay treks:

1. Bring toilet paper (there is none for the entire trek and none at the home stays). Luckily we brought some but we weren’t advised to bring any, so it’s lucky we did! It’s also squat toilets and cold bucket showers, so be prepared! (The cold water is very nice after a long day of hiking!)

2. The sleeping conditions are very tough. You sleep on the floor in a communal room with the family. The “mattress” they give you is extremely hard (expect sore hips if you sleep on your side) and the room itself is very noisy - our first night we shared the room with 10 people, including children and a baby who cried all night. People wake up at about 4 a.m. and start playing music on their phones. Next time I would bring ear plugs and a camping sleeping mattress to sleep on, as well as a sleep sheet and my own pillowcase as the blanket/pillow provided were really dirty. That said, it’s likely homestay dependent as the pillows and blanket at our second homestay smelled clean and that place was quieter (we only shared a room with three people).

3. We are vegetarian so the food was repetitive, but I found it tasty regardless. I don’t know what it would be like for meat eaters, but I think next time I would bring more snacks and energy bars.

4. The hiking on this particular trail is very nice with lots of up and down. We’re strong hikers and shaved an hour off the estimated hike time each day. The last day particularly involves hiking down a steep road for two hours, so if you have sensitive knees, bring hiking sticks.

Overall it was a wonderful experience, and truly interesting to see how the locals live, and the landscapes are lovely. The Lao people in the villages were kind, warm, and welcoming. For whatever trip you decide to do, ask for the guide Aaron. He was informative, helpful, and truly excited to show us his culture.

My wife and I have just returned from the 2 day 1 night discovery trek with Tiger Trails setting off from Nong Khiaw. Harp who runs the office at Nong Khiaw was super helpful and organised an excellent trip. Moon our guide was experienced and knowledgeable. The first day wasn’t strenuous, walking for around 2 hours before reaching the village where we would stayed the night. The afternoon was spent fishing before enjoying a bbq to eat our catch and some Laos Whiskey in the beautiful setting. Back to the village to spend time playing games with kids and enjoying a beer Laos in the hammock before a delicious evening meal with our hosts. Day 2 was about 5 hours trekking through jungle, rice paddies and villages and a walk up to the Tadmok Waterfall. It was the pleasant boat ride back to Nong Khiaw. Apart from the first lunch stop and the Tadmock waterfall we didn’t see many others, which was nice. Highly recommended tour.

I used this company to do two 1 day trips, the Fairtrek hike and the Chicken Run bike ride. The commutation beforehand was ok. The office is located on Kingkitsarath Road and Google Maps is accurate with its location. This is where your tour will leave from if you don’t have the supplement for a hotel pick up.
The Fairtrek day is good, not too difficult but you will be trekking for 6-7 hours (including stops) Although I’m not normally interested in culture I nevertheless found the villages fascinating as time seems to have stood still, particularly in the Mong village where only 5 families live. Here as well as no electricity there is no running water either. The final village is also where the home stay is which is just a basic room, mattress on the floor and a mosquito net. My guide was Khao and he was informative without going overboard. We walked at my pace and I was not hurried at any point.
The chicken run is basically the Chomphet loop (see Google maps) It was also really good as very few tourists cross over this side of the Mekong so lots of children wave and shout Sabadee as you pass. There are plenty of hills but none are particularly long and you’ll finish between 1430 & 1530. Oun was my guide on this one and again we went at my pace and I was not hurried
Overall two excellent days out and I would definitely use this company again

Great shop. Tom, the owner was super helpful and let us do a much needed cleaning of our drivetrain before setting out on the next leg of our bike journey. He was a wealth of information and gave us the time to describe alternate bike routes, accommodation options and other great tips. The place to go to for bike related rentals, tours and repairs.

I did the overnight hike to a Khmu village. Guys, if you were wondering whether to go or not - absolutely do it. It was everything I hoped it to be and more. I will remember the experience for the rest of my life

Jederzeit wieder!!

We did a 3 Day hike in the beautiful jungle around 1,5 hours north of Luang Prabang with Tiger trail. Our guide was the very kind, experienced and enthusiastic Chaney. When we arrived at the startingpoint it was not clear if we could do the whole trek because of the heavy rain which made it difficult to cross the rivers. We had such an adventure and the hike was very pretty. Chaney was really taking such good responsibility of our safety. We couldnt cross all the rivers, so we needed to change the trek at Day 2. They even offered us an extra Day due the circumstances. That was very kind, but not necesarry since they couldnt help the weather circumstances. The local Village where we slept the second day was basic and so lovely. The people were very kind. We absolutely recommend this organisation to everybody! Kop chai laylay Chaney!

My husband and I recently had an amazing 13-day trip through northern Laos planned by Roman with Tiger Trail Travel. The logistics were perfectly planned and carried out, and the scenery and places we saw were truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We really liked all of our guides, who spoke very good English and were very knowledgeable about the areas we visited, including those that were off the beaten path. One of our accommodations was amazing, one was excellent, and the rest were all fine except for one that we didn’t care for; be aware though that the room cleanliness standards are low in this area. If you want to travel to remote Northern Laos, plan your trip with Roman and Tiger Trail!

We had a really nice experience with Tiger Trail.
We did the 3 days tour biking, kayaking, hiking and visiting the villages in the mountains.
Homestays have been a really highlight of our travel and and an experience that you cannot do easily otherwise. We had the chance to participate to a village party and everyone was so welcoming!
Our guide Cha was really good and he makes us totally comfortable and safe in everything we were doing.
Definitely recommended if you want to take a glimp of authenticity and a real experience of ecotourism.
And... They provide loads of good food multiple time a day to be eaten in the craziest locations :)

Thanks all!

I rarely leave bad reviews but I was so unimpressed with Tiger Trail. One of the main reasons I booked was because of the great reviews but I was sad indeed not to experience this.

The good: our guide, Chancey was FANTASTIC. Knowledgeable with brilliant English he gave us the best hikes. Really enjoyed it and getting to know him.

The bad: the office firstly, we walked in and they told us they had no tours, then we reminded them we had been talking on email and they suddenly remembered.
We booked the tour and they charged a 3% card fee which is pretty unusual when you pay large sums. The office staff were a mix of Laos and European, and I said hi to the European owner several times and he totally ignored me. The Laos staff were lovely.

We tried to book a tour sold as ‘eco lodge tour’ as it has private eco lodges because we were keen on hiking but not on staying with strangers. However they told us the eco lodge was not available but assured us we would have our own room in a home stay, so off we went.
Both home stays we arrived at, in two villages had no idea we were coming. The first family were so unwelcoming we felt really bad to be in their space (the village itself was very kind and welcoming!). We really felt forced on this family to stay, at the start we were told everyone in the same room, then they found space separately. We totally understand in some places it’s not possible to have your own room, but then don’t sell the tour on that fact-we wouldn’t have booked it!

Both times we arrived at the village we spent at least 2 hours waiting for the head of the village to arrive and tell us where we would be sleeping. What a waste of time in this beautiful area to spend hours sitting on the road waiting.

We arrived at the second village who were very kind but again no separate room, and even more-not allowed for couples to stay together! Again I respect this is cultural differences but the tour could have told us, and we would simply not have booked.

Then we went to see the eco lodge, and it is up and running but we couldn’t stay there apparently. We ended up just stopping the tour early and returning to Luang Prabang and paying for a hotel.
Both places didn’t have the accomodation tiger trail promised and indeed we asked if they would have. I don’t recommend them at all.

Took a two day hike with a amazing tourguide. His name was Ouhn. A well English speaking young man with a loads of knowledge. During the trip he could tell stories about Lao and it's history. Really enjoyed the experience. The first day was mountainbiking with different stops to try local food and experience local things. Second day I booked a long hike, but because of forest works we had to take the shorr loop. Which was also nice but I was getting more excited for the long one. After all a good experience and many thanks to Ouhn.
