VAT XAYAPHOUM
This temple is located on the banks of the Mekong River in the city center. It was built in 1542 and is one of the oldest in the country. It is considered one of the most beautiful temples built during the reign of Phomvihane. It now houses a large monastic community and its own Buddhist school. Its architecture dates from the early Savannakhet period. A workshop where Buddha statues are built is located at the entrance. Ceremonies take place there on the occasion of the Lao New Year (Pi May) and the pirogue festival.
