170 km from Attapeu and 12 km from the Vietnamese border, Lake Nong Fa, also called Lake Nongphatom (the blue lake), was discovered in 1930. It lies in the heart of the Dong Amphanh National Protected Area. It is a volcanic lake nestled in a crater whose turquoise waters are said to harbour nagas and spirits. It is also said that at the bottom of this venerated lake, there are diamonds, or that bathing in it brings eternal youth... The place is of great beauty and is well worth a visit, but access is still very difficult.
