KALAMBO FALLS
On the Tanzanian border, these falls are among the highest in the world and occupy the2nd position in Africa after those of Tugela in South Africa. With their 221 m, they are twice as high as the Victoria Falls! Of course, they are not as powerful as the Victoria Falls, but the height is really breathtaking when you are at their feet. From the top, the view is spectacular, with the water jet making a vertical dive along the steep canyon wall. The walks along the edge of the escarpment are beautiful and with a guide, you can go on some nice hikes. The area is also an important archeological site that would have been occupied during the Stone Age, 60,000 years ago. The discoveries made have allowed archaeologists to determine a style of pottery called "Kalambo".
The falls can be reached by boat or on foot from the nearest tourist lodges. There is a campsite close to the Kalambo Falls with toilets and showers. From Mpulungu, campers can take the water bus to the small coastal villages and be dropped off at Nyamba. From this village, a 2-hour walk along a beautiful path leads to the top of the falls, where you can settle down for the night (bring your own provisions). However, the trip to Nyamba by boat can take up to 6 hours and, with several people, it will be more convenient to rent a water cab. By car, the best way is to go back to Mbala, separated from the falls by 40 km of good track.
