This cave became a sanctuary during the time of King Nayapatae Sethu, more than a thousand years ago, who ruled over the southern part of the Shan State. This king is credited with the construction of the Oo Min pagoda in Pindaya and the Phaungdaw Oo pagoda in Inle. At the time of the full moon in November, a festival takes place during which a Buddha is walked. The procession follows the road that separates the cave, Buddha's original residence, from the monastery that shelters him during the rest of the year.
