Formerly the central point of the city, the fort defended the Amarapura palace that it housed. But the finely carved woods went up in smoke during the Second World War, and the only remnant of the imperial splendour today is the Lion's Throne, which once dominated the Supreme Court Hall, now in Yangon's National Museum. The visit is therefore not a must do. You enter it by the East Gate, and apart from the palace, you can't photograph anything. The rest of the site is occupied by a military base, and any misconduct is prohibited.
