Its construction was launched in 1730 by King Tapin Gaway who left it unfinished. It was completed by his son, King Naha Dhamma Raja, in 1733, and renovated several times by subsequent kings. The pagoda is now a somewhat confusing mix of old and new buildings. To the east of the pagoda, a large image of Buddha is placed in a large prayer hall. Built in one piece from a block of alabaster, it weighs over 490 tons. It was consecrated by King Tapin Gaway before the pagoda was built.
