This gigantic golden pagoda is at the entrance of Nyaung Oo, coming from Old Bagan. Construction started by Anawratha but completed by Kyanzittha. Despite successive restorations over time, the current shape of the pagoda would be faithful to the original plans. The plinths of the three terraces are decorated with green jataka plaques. On each side of the pagoda is a small square temple housing a bronze Buddha. Architecturally, Shwezigon could be the typical model of the stūpas later built Burmese.
