The current construction of the Mahazedi pagoda dates back to 1982. Designed on the model of Mahacetiya of Ceylon, the original pagoda was built by Bayinnaung in 1560 to house a relic of a Buddha's tooth received from Ceylon. The tooth, which never really remained in Bago, is today in Sagaing, in the Kaunghmudaw pagoda. While men can take advantage of the 100 steps of the pagoda to enjoy a nice view at sunset, women are forced to climb only 18 steps...
