Than Lan means "defeat of Siam" in Mon. This pagoda thus celebrates an atypical victory of Mon over the Siamese armies. At the time, it was a question of building the highest pagoda in a minimum of time. While the Siamese had embarked on a hard construction, the Mon took them by storm by building a paper pagoda in record time! Today, it is still one of the highest Buddhist pagodas in the Moulmein region, standing about 46 metres high in the heart of the city.
