Behind the log building, built in 1654, is a stone of 540 kg which is reported as being raised by Sterke Nils (Nils His Langedal), the giant of Seljord who had been fed to horse milk. Sterke Nils's house is located on the hill behind the church.
The church of Flatdal is a langkirke, that is, a long and extensive construction to symbolize the holy path ("Via Sacra") which follows the race of the east sun to the west.
