OFFICE DU TOURISME
Vardø, located in the extreme north-east of Norway, is a destination offering rugged, almost lunar landscapes. As you travel along Norway's Scenic Route, you'll pass by Vardø, a small island that is home to the Steilneset Memorial. This moving monument tells the story of the 91 people, mostly women, who were burned alive for witchcraft in the 17th century. The route continues to Hamningberg, a picturesque abandoned fishing village that miraculously escaped the destruction of the Second World War. On the Varanger peninsula, you can observe numerous bird species up close, including the puffin on Hornøya Island, Norway's largest nesting site. As well as birdwatching, you can enjoy the incredible scenery, the midnight sun and maybe even an aurora borealis. Vardø is also a city rich in history, with historic monuments such as the Steilneset memorial, as well as a touch of modernity with its street art scattered around the streets. Finally, be sure to visit Varanger's "Arctic Riviera", Ekkerøy, with its sandy beaches and refreshing Arctic waters.
