The best-known is undoubtedly the poet Rubén Darío, who developed the modernist movement in Central and Latin America (read his book Azul, published in Chile in 1888). Contemporary writers include the author Gioconda Belli, now Chilean after being stripped of her nationality by Daniel Ortega for her writings critical of the regime (some of her texts have been translated into French).
