ESTADIO NACIONAL SOBERANÍA
With a capacity of 15,000 spectators, it is the largest stadium in Nicaragua. Built not far from the Tiscapa lagoon in 1948, it withstood the 1972 earthquake and bears the name of Nicaraguan baseball star Dennis Martínez, who was the country's first player to reach the North American Major Leagues. Martínez played for the Montreal Expos between 1986 and 1993. So it's only natural that the stadium is mainly used for baseball games. But it also serves as a soccer field for Managua's first, second and third division teams, hosts concerts and religious events, and has a gymnasium. Inside, you can also see the hall of fame, which features medals, cups and photographs of many Nicaraguan players. The exhibition is open on match days and free of charge.
On average, the Dennis Martínez National Stadium hosts five baseball games a week. Tickets cost between C$5 and C$20, depending on the seat. Games start early evening on weekdays, Saturday afternoon and late morning on Sundays. No need to buy your ticket in advance: just arrive 30 minutes before the game and go straight to the ticket office. Whether you're a baseball fan or don't know the rules, the atmosphere is well worth the detour! And we bet you'll get into the swing of things in no time!
