Once located on the outskirts of the city, the cemetery was gradually overtaken and swallowed up by encroaching urbanism. Victims of a cholera epidemic that struck the city in 1855 were buried here. Along with two other cemeteries (San José in Granada and Greytown in San Juan del Norte), it is one of three declared a National Historic and Artistic Heritage Site by the National Assembly. It contains the graves of Nicaraguan personalities such as Andrés Castro, José Zacarías Guerra and General Andrés Zamora.
