New, resolutely post-modern (or so they say) and not necessarily beautiful, the presidential palace is a real eye-catcher. The former presidential palace was destroyed by the 1972 earthquake. Nearby, take a look at the marble fountain erected in honor of Rubén Darío, and adorned with verses by the famous national poet. When Daniel Ortega won the elections in 2007, he decided not to live in the presidential house as a symbol of the socialist vision (by refusing this privilege).
