In the run-up to the festive season, this typically Nicaraguan custom is a source of great joy.
As in the rest of the country, altars of flowers, plants and candles are set up in honor of the Virgin Mary. Children sing in the streets, and are given toffees and oranges. Each district of the city decorates a vehicle with flowers and plants, depicting religious scenes. Here, the Virgin is known as La Conchita, a Franciscan statue that was pulled from the waters of Lake Cocibolca by a woman in 1721.
