The town was built around this church (the original wall separating the Spanish quarter from the indigenous quarter can still be seen). Rebuilt in 1890 after a fire, the interior is not particularly charming. The walls at the opposite corner from the church were built by Brigadier Fernandez de Heredia in 1751, perhaps to protect the two squares from heavy alluvial flooding in wet weather. The park opposite was laid out two years later. It was recently renovated with funds from a Spanish cooperative.
