At the end of Calle Real (a pleasant stroll from the central square), this fortress was built in 1748 by Luis Diez Navarro. Initially used as a depot for gunpowder and explosives, it became a prison during the Somozist reign, then the headquarters of the municipal police during the Sandinista period. Today, it's a sort of open-air museum. Imposing appearance, with its adobe walls and high turrets. You can take a guided tour, or just wander around freely.
