La Merced church was built in 1762, then destroyed and rebuilt a few years later. Blending neoclassical, baroque and colonial styles, its interior is one of the finest examples of 18th-century religious ornamentation in León. The church houses the image of the Virgen de La Merced brought from Barcelona, symbol of the city. Every September 24, this image is paraded through the streets. Tradition has it that in the early 19th century, a black slave saved the icon from the flames (after which he was granted his freedom).
