The square was the site of the 350,000-strong demonstration that took place at Romero's funeral in 1980.
Plaça Gerardo Barrios was the scene of a demonstration for the funeral of Mgr Romero in 1980. This gathering was suppressed by the government, and the next day, many pairs of shoes lost in the chaos littered the ground... along with some fifty bodies. Today, a bronze statue stands in honor of Gerardo Barrios (president of El Salvador for only three months in 1858, and one of the instigators of Central American unity).
