A beautiful nature reserve offering a pleasant walk with a superb view of the Pacific Ocean, while enjoying the fresh air of the volcanic mountains. The Walter Thilo Deininger National Park, which recently saw the famous "Surf City" appended to its name, covers 732 hectares and preserves medicinal plants, over a thousand apple trees and, above all, a tropical dry forest home to a variety of fauna and flora catalogued as endangered. Deer, wolverines, armadillos, garrobos, snakes and the masacuata are some of the species that live inside the park, in addition to 70 species of birds and some 20 types of amphibians. Don't miss the environmental center. Specialized guides can accompany you on the various trails.
El Mirador. This trail offers visitors a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, you'll discover a river, the Cueva del Encanto ("Cave of Enchantment") and its legend.
The ruta de la Mariposa passes through lush landscapes. Allow 4 hours' walking, departing at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m
The Camino a la Aventura, also a 4-hour loop, departs at 10 a.m.
For the more adventurous, the Madre Cacao is reserved for mountain bikes.
A canopy tour is also available. It consists of a 270-metre treetop trail at an altitude of over 30 metres.
