VOLCANO CHINGO
A site with majestic landscapes and remarkable views of mountains, lakes, volcanoes...
A natural curiosity off the beaten track, where you can admire majestic landscapes and enjoy remarkable views over a whole mountain range. You'll also enjoy breathtaking views of Lake Guija in El Salvador and the beautiful Atescatempa lagoon on the Guatemalan side.
What's more, the view is unique, including most of El Salvador's volcanoes and those of southern Guatemala. At the summit is a monument marking the border between the two countries.
The climb to the top of the volcano is 800 metres long and presents no particular difficulties.
Even though it's in a hot region, the hike is pleasant due to the altitude, the lush forest providing protection from the sun's rays and the refreshing breeze.
The path is flowered in season and runs alongside lemon plantations. The descent into the crater takes you through dense tropical forest to the bottom, which offers a pleasant resting place for a picnic. It's a unique and rare sight, well worth the few breathless moments on the way up! Guides are available to accompany you if you wish, to explain the history of the volcano and the local flora and fauna.
To get to the Chingo volcano from San Salvador, head towards Santa Ana, then continue towards Ahuachapan, passing through the town of Chalchuapa. At the last crossroads, turn right towards La Magdalena and then El Coco.
