15-hectare archaeological site at an altitude of 1,400 metres, featuring monolithic statues of women supporting their bellies
The Mayan archaeological site of Santa Leticia lies at an altitude of 1,400 metres. Dating from 600 BC, this 15-hectare site is famous for its three imposing Gordinflones or Potbelly monoliths. Some archaeologists believe that Mayan expansion in El Salvador began here, as these monolithic statues look northwards, and depict women supporting their bellies with both hands (as if pregnant).
